Moving money

On the SUVs, yachts, and helicopters of Succession.

Henry Boon writes in praise of Succession's transport sequences.

“What’s it gonna take? You want me to send a vintage Jaguar over to your house today? I’ll do it.”

Not long into the Succession pilot, Kendall Roy (Jeremy Strong)—self-proclaimed heir to his father’s media conglomerate empire, and one of a litter of four shining examples of the dangers of inherited wealth—has made this offer. Already, a good idea of him, his Rupert Murdoch-esque father Logan (Brian Cox), and his three siblings-cum-rivals is beginning to develop. In short: they’re rich, self-serving, but oddly endearing, assholes. But it’s not until they spring into motion to travel across the city that their status and their values are truly cemented. A Jaguar is small fry.

At the drop of a hat, a fleet of gleaming, blacked-out SUVs whisks them to the nearest helipad where shimmering helicopters await. In perfect tight formation, they glide smoothly and silently to their destination. It’s a garishly decadent way to travel, especially when you consider the Roys' destination: a Long Island baseball field. These are the kinds of people who throw money around for sport. And once they arrive, disembarking from the ostentatious aircraft, they go on to do just that, humiliating a child from lesser means in the process.

These sequences are at the heart of the series.
