Skincare shitposting

Talking male beauty with the Dewy Dudes.

Jocelyn Silver interviews podcast hosts the Dewy Dudes.

Despite the fact that I am an adult woman with a career primarily spent in magazines where you aren’t paid very much but you are sent a lot of free stuff, I find skincare overwhelming. Regardless of my fluency in Biologique Recherche and A313 retinol, the more I learn, the less I feel I know—there are just so many acids, and I always forget in which order I am supposed to be using them. Skincare is essentially science, a subject in which I never did very well, except for in a college class about the history of eugenics. It’s frightening, and no one else seems overwhelmed, with all their talk of AHAs and BHAs and TikTok product recommendations.

And so I often take comfort in Dewy Dudes, an affable podcast and meme page in which two Brooklyn bros tackle the ins and outs of attempting to look like a glazed donut, as the Glossier highlighter copy used to read. 29-year-old hosts Emilio Quezada Ibañez and Evan Shinn, who initially met as scene kids growing up in Kansas, bring a light touch and sense of extremely online humor to the subject, making memes about Masque Vivant and collagen peptides and cracking jokes with guests ranging from celebrated aestheticians to noted Snake Oil saleswoman Caroline Calloway.

Ibañez and Shinn bring a tongue-in-cheek, lighthearted sense of humor to a subject that routinely makes me pine for a quick and painless death (my dermatologist has been a little too honest with me lately). They are young and male, which probably makes skincare a little more fun and a little less “it puts the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again” (sorry). And so we called them up to talk about skincare for men, their current routines, and the importance of staying dewy.
